ABOUT TIME FOR MORE DEMOCRATIC POLITICS?

Roundtable #Democratic Futures

Who had decision-making power over exit restrictions in the pandemic? Is our Bundestag too big? Are foreigners allowed to vote, and would a nationwide citizens' council be appropriate for climate policy issues? Considered together, these are questions of democratic policy. This policy field, which discusses representation, negotiation processes and participation for all of us, is little known to most people and has not been given a particularly prominent position so far.

However, the new government of SPD, FDP, and the Green Party agreed in their coalition agreement on a strengthened democracy policy. A promise yet to be kept. In view of increasing social tensions in the wake of the gas and price crisis, as well as in times of grave decisions about the future, we would like to ask: Must we dare more politics for our democracies?

On 14 September, we invite you to discuss with us at our roundtable #DemocraticFutures what contemporary democracy policy means and how it can become an independent policy field in Germany. The event will take place at the Telefonica Lounge in Berlin, Germany.

Christopher Gohl, Weltethos-Institut and University of Tübingen, Siri Hummel, Maecenata Institute and Ariane Fäscher, Member of Parliament, will join the debate. The roundtable will be moderated by Lenz Jacobsen, political editor at ZEIT ONLINE.

The event is a cooperation between Das Progressive Zentrum, the Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft, and the Center for Liberal Modernity. It is part of the #DemocraticFutures series.
